With the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL Western conference finals, as well as both the Lakers and Clippers both in the NBA Western conference semi finals, and the MLB’s Dodgers jumping out to an early lead in the National League West, the sports betting scene in California is as popular at it has been in a long time. However, for those not interested in playing the major sports, there is still some of the most popular horse racing tracks from across the United States right there on the California coast, including the Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley. Home to the San Francisco Mile Stakes and the Golden Gate Derby, the Golden Gate Fields is among the most popular betting destinations for players living in the Berkeley area.

Opened back in 1941, the Golden Gate Fields is set on 140 acres of land, with a one-mile synthetic track for Thoroughbred flat racing right in its center. The main grandstand for the track sets approximately 8,000 fans, with the clubhouse providing room for over 5,000 more. Owned by the Stronach Group, the same group that owns the Santa Anita Park and the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, the Golden Gate Fields is now the only major race track in the Northern California area, with the Bay Meadows racetrack now closed for close to five years. Betting fans in California undoubtedly have a ton of options right now, but for the classic horse racing fans the Golden Gate Fields is the place to be this season.

Online Sports Betting – Batavia Downs Among Many Race Tracks Spread Across New York State

When it comes to horse racing across North America, there has never been a shortage of race tracks across the state of New York, stretching from Rochester to Albany, and in and around New York City. One horse racing track that has hosted a ton of events over the past 71 years is the Batavia Downs Racetrack, located in the Genesee County between Buffalo and Rochester. First opened in September of 1940, the Batavia Downs track is exactly ½ mile long, and is one of the most recently renovated Racino locations that have a Batavia Downs Gaming terminal inside the actual building to provide a feel more similar to that of the courses that host events listed on betting websites.

Owned by the Western OTB group, the track was first built for par-mutual wagering on horse races at a location chosen by William “Lefty” Goldberg in 1939. Goldberg was able to convince a bunch of stockholders to invest in the location between the two cities, feeling that it would be the perfect location for the sports betting location. The ownership group was right about the location, attracting crowds of more than 2,500 in the early going, and over the decades since the track has been improved with upgrades all throughout the grounds. The Batavia Downs Gaming changes came after 2001, when the New York state legislature passed a bill to allow the racetracks in the state to have Video Lottery Terminals inside of them. Over 5,000 people attended opening night for the Batavia Video Lottery era in 2005, and the building has operated the alternative betting games ever since.

Online Horse Racing – Historic Hawthorne Race Course Among The Most Popular Illinois Sporting Venues

From one generation on to the next, horse racing has long been one of the most popular North American sports betting traditions, and while over the past couple of decades the a lot of the action has moved online, there once was a day that betting fans had to go to some of the most historic sporting venues across the country to place their wagers. One of those sports landmarks is the Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney/Cicero, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The oldest continually run, family-owned race track in North America, Hawthorne is ranked No. 8 in the Horseplayers Association of North America rating system for Thoroughbred courses.

Originally built by a Chicago businessman named Edward Corrigan, who actually also owned the 1890 Kentucky Derby winner Riley, the race course was spread over 119 acres of land, and first opened in 1891. When horse racing was banned in Chicago back in 1905, the field was used by a couple of pioneer aviators in Victor and Allan Haines Loughead, who would end up flying a powered Montgomery glider and a Curtiss pusher in one of the most unique circumstances in the course’s history. The track has since re-opened and closed for several different reasons, withstanding the test of time to become recognized as one of the great Illinois sports venues. The Madhouse in Manhattan will get a ton of attention from NHL fans, but when it comes to horse racing, the Hawthorne Race Course will not be overlooked by the horse race fans that make the trip out there every spring.

Online Sports Betting – A Quick Look At The Iconic Churchill Downs

One of the most iconic sports betting race tracks in North America, the historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky has been the site of some of the most exciting horse racing events since its doors first opened all the way back in 1875. Home to the annual Kentucky Derby as the first leg of the Triple Crown, Churchill Downs was rated fifth on the list of Thoroughbred race tracks by the Horseplayers Association of North America back in 2009, but its prestige goes far beyond any ranking system.

Named after John and Henry Churchill, the two men who leased 80 acres of land to build the track all the way back in the 1800’s, the Churchill Downs was originally created to fill the void left by the closing of Oakland and Woodlawn, which were two of the tracks built earlier in the area. The facility has seen many changes since its inception, but the basic layout and design of the track stand now the same way they did when it was first built, which only adds to the allure of the course. Withstanding tough periods such as the depression and natural disasters like the powerful tornados that have swept the area, the Churchill Downs opens in the spring with events that precede the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, and remains open all the way through the fall when smaller races run around Thanksgiving in late November. The pay head bookies have gained an appreciation for such venues as Churchill Downs over the years with everything that they have to offer in terms of the events that take place now, and the historical significance of past races, and it’s something that won’t ever be forgotten with the arrival of baseball betting season also signaling the beginning of the horse racing year.

Online Horse Racing – A Quick Look At The Exotic Horse Racing Wagers

Sports betting on horse racing can be as simple as picking winners, but for those that are interested in a little more, there are exotic wagers available that can add a little excitement and an even bigger payout opportunity. The two basic types of wagers include inter-race exotic and intra-race exotic, under which different options fall.

Intra-race exotic wagers involve multiple horses in the same race, and include the Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta, and Superfecta. To win an Exacta, the player must predict which horses will finish in the top-two in that race, including pointing out which horse will be the winner and which will be the runner-up. The Quinella is similar to the Exacta in that the per head player must choose the top-two finishers, only you don’t need to label which order they will finish in. Since it is easier to pick the top-two without defining the order the Quinella is the easier of the two bets, and with that comes the lesser payout but the greater chance of winning. The Trifecta follows the model of the Exacta, only with this wager the player must predict the order of the top-three rather than the top-two, as well as the Superfecta, only the top-four have to be labeled in the proper order. Meanwhile, inter-race exotic wagers involved picking multiple horses, only they are chosen for more than one race. These include the daily double, which in most cases includes picking the winner of the first two races or the second two races at a track, an the pick three option, which comes down to picking the winner in three consecutive Betonline races.

Online Horse Racing – Holding The Belmont Tradition In High Regard

Every year the sports betting world takes in the Triple Crown races, and while the winners are never the same, the level of excitement is always high, and the ending always a thrill to take in as millions of dollars are decided in mere seconds. The Belmont Stakes is one of those races that fans have come to love as the final leg of the Triple Crown, taking place on the first Saturday of every June. Named after August Belmont I, an investment banker and thoroughbred owner who was president of the American Jockey Club, the Belmont Stakes has provided some of the most dramatic moments in the history of the sport.

The Triple Crown has been won a total of 11 times, which makes it easy to understand why the final leg of the three-race event would be so exciting to watch with the chance for a horse to join the legends of the sport. Secretariat ran the race in just 2:24 as the sportsbook favorite when it won the Triple Crown back in 1973, setting the record time for the event while winning the race by an incredible 31 lengths. That Belmont Stakes may still be the most memorable to date, but even when there isn’t a Triple Crown race the rich history and prestige of the event makes it hard to resist for even the casual per head fan. There have been many horses that have come close to beating Secretariat’s record, and several tight finishes that will always be remembered. In 1998, the horse Real Quiet opened up a four-length lead with a furlong to go, only to lost it at the final jump to Victory Gallop in the perfect example of why the Belmont Stakes is such an exciting event.

Online Horse Racing – Handicapping Maiden Races Takes A Little More Patience

February 7, 2012

When it comes to horse racing, one of the most effective sports betting tools is to use the information on a horse from previous races in order to handicap how it will run in the next event. While that is a simple enough concept to understand, it is also one that makes it difficult for players to want to bet on maiden races, where those numbers aren’t available. Most horse racing fans will stay away from maiden races altogether, claiming that there isn’t enough information that is readily available to handicap the race. However, that is not true at all, with the horse’s speed figures, pace figures, video replays, trainer statistics and more all available to analyze ahead of a maiden race.

The pay head bookies don’t make the lines for horse races to beat the players, as they change based on the amount of money that is played on each entrant. Essentially, unlike the NFL or any other sport, playing horse racing comes down to beating the other players who are also wagering rather than playing the bookies. In the case of a maiden race, this makes the odds even more attractive when the other players want to stay away from the horses that they claim not to know. By looking at the data listed above, as well as the pedigree of the horse and the family it came from, you can usually get a very good idea of where it will finish compared to the other entrants. Handicapping maiden races isn’t an impossible job, it just requires a little more research and patience to do it the right way.

Online Sports Betting – Pace Among The Biggest Factors In Horse Racing

January 25, 2012

When it comes to betting on the NFL, players seem to always have every angle, trend, injury, and other factor overanalyzed to the point where it can be a little overwhelming when it comes to laying down their money. For whatever reason, the same cannot be said about horse racing. In fact, when it comes to sports betting on horse racing, more than any other sport it appears as though players seem to overlook some of the most important factors to determining the outcome of a given race. One of those overlooked factors that can go a long way to determining the outcome of a race is pace, as the correlation between the time of a past race and where each entrant was at different points can make understanding the potential outcome that much easier.

All horses are bred differently, and accordingly, they have different running styles. So while some horses might be quick out of the gate and excellent running at short distances, others are bred to come on late and have a better chance in longer races that depend on stamina. Success in playing the Betonline odds is based on being able to see the race before it happens, and there is no better way to break it down than by looking at previous races and seeing how the horse did the whole way through. The next time you play the horses take a look at some of each entrants previous pace numbers, particularly in the big derby races, and make an effort to match those times with any future wager.

Online Sports Betting – How To Gain An Edge In Horse Races On Polytrack Surfaces

January 10, 2012

One of the most overlooked aspects of sports betting when it comes to horse racing is paying attention to the different types of tracks, as there are several different surfaces that can have a strong impact on the outcome of different races. Often times when two horses come close at the very end, the casual observe overlooks the differences that could have taken place if the race was held on a different surface, focusing instead on the actual horses involved and blaming them for the result. While the times can end up being different for several different surfaces, one that stands out with the pay head bookies is the Polytrack, for which times have been significantly slower and the form has changed.

When it comes to finding the right horse to play on the non-wax synthetic course, one of the key factors is experience, and paying attention to how the horse did the first time around. If the horse did well in its first race on a Polytrack course, then the odds are that it will have another strong showing, particularly against those that are in the field that haven’t raced on the surface before. Workouts can go a long way to determining which horse is ready for the race as well, as with the recorded times usually a lot slower, it doesn’t always have to do with the trainer pushing or deciding to hold back a horse. Pay attention to the sportsbook odds and try and figure out based on experience and workouts which horse is the most ready for these types of races, and then run with them.
